The booking decision
AIDAluna now occupies an attractive middle position. It retains the clear, compact Sphinx layout but no longer asks passengers to accept a visibly old product. The seven-week 2025 refit renewed cabins, restaurants, bars, spa provision and family spaces, while the ship’s 1,039-cabin scale remains much easier to understand than AIDA’s largest vessels.
The result is particularly strong for couples and adults who want informal AIDA atmosphere without buying a floating water park. Families still have clubs, pools and activity, but there is no Mini Club and the hardware cannot match AIDAnova. The ship should therefore be chosen for balance and itinerary, not maximum facility count.
What the 2025 Evolution work changed
The modernisation was not a cosmetic carpet refresh. AIDAluna gained a renewed Theatrium, updated cabins, Rossini Restaurant & Lounge, French Kiss Bar & Bistro, Tapas & Bar, Yachtclub, Lanai Bar, Panorama Lounge & Bar, a Fun Park and updated beauty and spa services. Suite guests also gained a dedicated Sky Deck.
Those additions make pre-refit reviews unreliable for dining, décor and the feel of central public areas. Use the current AIDAluna ship page and current deck plan. The hull and circulation pattern remain familiar, but the product inside is materially newer.
Layout and crowd flow
The Sphinx design centres daily life around the Theatrium, with restaurants, bars and stairways feeding into the same social core. It feels open and informal, while the smaller overall scale reduces the long walks found on AIDAnova. Passengers can learn the layout quickly and move between dining, entertainment and open decks without treating each journey as a project.
The central openness also carries sound. Cabins and seating near the Theatrium can feel connected to evening activity rather than secluded from it. Choose a quieter corridor if early nights matter, and check the location of children’s and late-night spaces before assuming every midship cabin is equally calm.
Cabins after the refurbishment
All cabin categories received a fresher visual treatment, making the ship more credible at current prices. The underlying cabin dimensions did not become those of a new-build, so families should still inspect floor space, storage and extra-bed layout. A renewed interior cannot solve an unsuitable occupancy choice.
Balcony supply is more limited than on newer AIDA ships, which can widen the price gap between inside, sea-view and balcony categories. Pay for the balcony when private outdoor space will be used, not because it is automatically the best cabin. For accessible cabins, confirm shower arrangement, turning space and route after the refit.
Dining in the renewed ship
The post-refit mix of 10 restaurants and food concepts is varied enough for a week without pretending to be a mega-ship. Yachtclub supports relaxed buffet dining, Rossini provides a more refined option, French Kiss adds a sociable bistro and Tapas & Bar gives passengers a casual alternative around the central evening flow.
AIDA’s charging model still matters. Compare the current venue list with your fare inclusions and drinks package. The refit creates more choice, but it does not mean every meal and drink is covered by the base fare.
Pools, spa and open decks
Seven pools and water areas provide a reasonable family and sun-deck offer for a ship of this scale. The experience is more traditional than the covered Beach Club and large slide complexes on newer sisters. On warm routes, the open deck can be lively; in poor weather, there is less indoor pool resilience than on AIDAprima or AIDAperla.
The 2,300 m² spa remains a meaningful facility, and the updated Hair & Nail Spa broadens the paid wellness offer. Suite-only Sky Deck access adds exclusivity for a small group rather than creating a general adults-only retreat. Check prices before assuming the spa is included.
Children, teenagers and family fit
AIDAluna has Kids Club, teen provision, pools and renewed family spaces, but it does not offer the dedicated Mini Club nursery found on AIDAnova, AIDAcosma, AIDAprima and AIDAperla. Families with nursery-age children should treat that distinction as a booking decision, not a minor footnote.
Older children may prefer the manageable ship and Fun Park to a vast resort, especially on port-intensive routes. German is the main language for announcements, children’s activities, comedy and most hosted entertainment. Menus and practical information are often easier to navigate than dialogue-heavy events, but British passengers should not book expecting an English-language cruise product. Families should verify age bands, registration and opening arrangements for the exact cruise.
Entertainment, bars and atmosphere
The refreshed Theatrium remains the social heart, now supported by newer bar and restaurant concepts. Panorama Lounge & Bar, Lanai Bar and French Kiss create different moods without requiring a huge ship. The atmosphere is lively and informal rather than formal or hushed.
Visual shows and music translate most easily for British guests. Dialogue-heavy events remain German-led. The smaller ship can make the social environment feel more immediate, which suits passengers who enjoy shared spaces and may feel intrusive to those seeking anonymity.
Accessibility and movement
The manageable footprint is an advantage for passengers who tire on long ships, but age and refit do not automatically guarantee ideal accessibility. Obtain the exact adapted-cabin plan and ask how lifts, thresholds and gangway routes work. The central Theatrium can be busy at show and dining times.
Choose a cabin for the route you will make most often. A passenger prioritising the main restaurants may make a different choice from someone using the spa or Kids Club. A short ship is helpful only when the cabin and lift bank are well matched.
Itineraries and value
AIDAluna’s smaller scale supports varied European, Atlantic and longer itineraries, including ports that are less natural for the largest resort ships. That makes itinerary quality central to the purchase. A strong route on AIDAluna can be more rewarding than a weaker route on a newer vessel.
The modernisation may support higher fares than older reviews suggest. Compare the total price with AIDAdiva and AIDAbella, which share the renewed first-generation proposition. The correct sister is usually the one with the best route, cabin and travel logistics.
AIDAluna versus AIDAdiva and AIDAbella
All three first-generation sisters are now modernised. AIDAluna should not be chosen simply because its refit was later than AIDAdiva’s, nor rejected because AIDAbella followed in 2026. Their scale and central concept remain similar. Venue details, itinerary and exact fare now matter more than age.
AIDAbella has a particularly clear family and sport emphasis, while AIDAdiva is a strong general introduction to the renewed trio. AIDAluna earns its place through a complete 2025 refresh and broad itinerary fit. None gains the Mini Club or major water hardware of the larger classes.
Who should book AIDAluna?
Book AIDAluna for a renewed, easy-to-learn ship that places itinerary and social atmosphere ahead of resort scale. It is one of the best AIDA choices for adults who like informal cruising but do not need an English programme. It also works for families with school-age children who prefer a manageable footprint.
Choose AIDAnova or AIDAcosma for the widest family hardware, AIDAprima or AIDAperla for covered all-weather facilities, and AIDAsol for certain long-voyage itineraries. AIDAluna’s strength is balance, not dominance in every category.

- Compare AIDAluna, AIDAdiva and AIDAbella by route, fare and exact cabin rather than refit date alone.
