The booking decision
AIDAblu’s appeal is more individual than a simple specifications table suggests. The ship has an onboard Brauhaus with beer brewed at sea, a familiar mid-sized Sphinx layout and strong Mediterranean use. Those features can make it more enjoyable than a generic newer ship for passengers who value atmosphere and route.
The complication is timing. AIDAblu is scheduled for a major Evolution refit and returns in March 2027. Bookings before that date use the current eight-restaurant product; later cruises should gain renewed cabins, expanded dining and updated public spaces. A fair comparison must use the correct version.
The Brauhaus and ship identity
The Brauhaus is AIDAblu’s clearest distinguishing venue. Fresh beer brewed on board, hearty food and a sociable German atmosphere create a stronger sense of identity than many fleet-wide facilities. It can be a highlight for adults and a good informal meal, but it is not a neutral international pub experience.
The venue also illustrates the language and culture decision. British passengers comfortable joining a German-led social environment may find the ship memorable. Those expecting English pub entertainment or familiar service conventions may feel outside the centre of the experience.
What the 2027 refit is expected to bring
AIDAblu follows AIDAmar in the Evolution programme. Planned changes for the second-generation ships include renewed cabins, a refreshed Theatrium, expanded restaurant choice, new bars, improved family spaces and updated spa provision. Mediterranea is due to reach AIDAblu from spring 2027.
Do not assume every AIDAmar concept transfers identically. Check the current AIDAblu ship page and post-refit deck plan for the exact mix. The safest description before completion is a planned renewed product, not a completed one.
Layout and scale
At 252 metres with 1,100 cabins, AIDAblu is much easier to navigate than AIDAnova. The modified Sphinx design has a central Theatrium and broad open-deck areas, while the extra half-deck supports a larger spa than the first-generation sisters. It feels like a substantial ship without becoming a floating city.
The central core is sociable but not acoustically isolated. Cabins close to entertainment routes can hear more activity, and popular dining times concentrate people. Use the deck plan to choose a quiet corridor or an efficient route to the venues that matter.
Cabins before and after modernisation
Current cabins reflect the pre-refit product. Evolution is expected to refresh finishes throughout the inventory, which will improve visual appeal without changing basic dimensions. Balcony cabins remain less numerous than on newer ships and may command a premium.
Check the sailing date before relying on photographs. A pre-refit review can still reveal storage, floor space and location, while post-refit material is needed for finishes and furniture. Families should inspect extra-bed use, and accessible-cabin users should obtain the exact plan.
Dining and the evolving restaurant mix
Before modernisation, AIDAblu lists eight restaurants, including its distinctive Brauhaus. The 2027 programme is intended to expand the mix, with Mediterranea among the announced additions. That creates more choice but also makes old venue lists obsolete for spring 2027 departures.
AIDA’s buffet, speciality and à-la-carte charging rules still apply. Read the ship-specific page beside the fare inclusions. A new venue is not automatically included, and a drinks package does not necessarily cover every product.
Pools, spa and warm-weather fit
Six pools and water areas support a conventional open-deck holiday. The ship is especially sensible on Mediterranean routes where outdoor use is reliable. In poor weather, it cannot match the covered Beach Club on AIDAprima or AIDAperla, so itinerary and season influence the value of the hardware.
The 2,600 m² spa is a strong adult facility and will receive updated provision through Evolution. It offers a way to step away from family and Theatrium activity, but access and treatments can add cost. Price them before using the spa as a booking justification.
Children and teenagers
AIDAblu has Kids Club, teen provision, pools and family activity, but no dedicated Mini Club. The post-refit product is expected to improve family spaces without changing that fundamental age-service distinction. Parents of toddlers should compare the ship with AIDAprima, AIDAperla, AIDAnova or AIDAcosma.
German is the main language for announcements, children’s activities, comedy and most hosted entertainment. Menus and practical information are often easier to navigate than dialogue-heavy events, but British passengers should not book expecting an English-language cruise product. School-age children who enjoy sport, pools and a sociable ship may still be well served, particularly on port-rich Mediterranean itineraries.
Entertainment and evenings
The Theatrium brings shows and hosted activity into the centre of the ship. The Brauhaus, bars and clubs add a distinctly German evening character. Music and visual performance remain the easiest forms of entertainment for non-German speakers; comedy and quizzes are less accessible.
Evolution will refresh the central spaces and bar mix, but the informal culture remains. Travellers seeking formal theatre nights and English conversation should choose a different line rather than expecting refurbishment to change AIDA’s identity.
Accessibility and movement
The mid-sized layout reduces daily walking, yet selected accessible cabins and route details still need confirmation. Ask about bathroom fittings, thresholds, balcony access and the lift bank. The refit may change furniture and public-space finishes without changing structural limitations.
Mediterranean itineraries can include steep towns, tender calls and coach transfers. The ship may be manageable while the ports are not. Review the entire route and excursion plan when mobility is limited.
Itineraries and British logistics
AIDAblu is naturally suited to Mediterranean and European fly-cruises. Warm weather supports the open pools and deck spaces, while frequent ports reward its manageable scale. The absence of a regular UK homeport programme means the journey is part of the cost calculation.
Add flights, luggage, transfers and any hotel night before comparing with a UK departure. The correct cruise may still be excellent value, especially when the itinerary is strong, but a cheap cabin is not the whole holiday price.
AIDAblu versus AIDAmar and AIDAsol
AIDAblu and AIDAmar are close second-generation sisters with different refit dates. AIDAmar returns renewed at Christmas 2026; AIDAblu follows in March 2027. During that gap, comparing their headline fares without accounting for product status is misleading.
AIDAsol remains useful for long-voyage and world-cruise sectors, while AIDAblu has the Brauhaus identity and Mediterranean fit. Choose by route, completed modernisation and total price rather than by build year.
Who should book AIDAblu?
Book AIDAblu for a characterful, manageable ship on a strong warm-weather itinerary. The Brauhaus and informal German atmosphere are genuine reasons to choose it. From spring 2027, the renewed product should strengthen its value against the modernised first-generation ships.
Do not pay for promised facilities on a pre-refit sailing. Choose a larger class when nursery care, covered pools and extensive family hardware are essential. AIDAblu is best for passengers who like its specific personality, not those merely seeking the newest specification.
Choosing between pre-refit and post-refit AIDAblu
AIDAblu has two distinct booking identities around its planned March 2027 return. A pre-refit sailing may offer an attractive fare and retains the familiar Brauhaus-centred personality, but it should be bought as the existing ship rather than as a discounted preview of future facilities. A post-refit sailing should be assessed from the final deck plan and confirmed venue list once AIDA publishes them.
The best value may therefore sit on either side of the refit. Loyal guests who like the current layout can reasonably prefer a cheaper earlier voyage, while newcomers may gain more from waiting for renewed cabins and public areas. The itinerary remains decisive. A strong Mediterranean or Canary Islands programme can outweigh a small price difference, whereas an awkward travel plan is not repaired by newer decor.
