The booking decision
Diamond Princess is most persuasive as part of a Japan or Asia holiday. The ship was built in Japan and carries features that are not merely decorative, particularly Izumi Japanese Bath and a dining structure adapted to regional deployment. These distinctions matter more than its superficial similarity to Sapphire Princess.
The ship entered service in 2004 and was refurbished in 2019. Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill were added in January 2026, so older tours and restaurant lists can be outdated. Choose Diamond because the itinerary and Japanese product fit the trip, while accepting older cabins and fewer new-generation venues.

Izumi Japanese Bath and regional identity
Princess describes Izumi as the largest Japanese bath of its kind at sea. It includes indoor and outdoor bathing experiences and is the clearest reason to treat Diamond as ship-specific. Passengers must follow bathing etiquette and should check session arrangements, charges and any restrictions before boarding.
Japan seasons can produce a more international language and dining mix than a typical North American Princess sailing. This is a strength for travellers who want the destination reflected onboard. It can surprise passengers expecting an entirely Anglo-American atmosphere.
Layout, capacity and official-data differences
Diamond has a Piazza, Princess Theatre, Explorers Lounge, Wheelhouse, Crooners, Club Fusion, Skywalkers and Churchill Lounge. Five main dining rooms distribute evening demand differently from the three-room pattern on many sisters.
Current official sources do not agree perfectly on capacity and cabin totals. The latest ship page and January 2026 release use 2,670 guests, while the fact sheet lists 2,710. The guide uses the newer operating figure and flags the discrepancy rather than pretending the records are identical.
Cabins and long-haul practicality
More than 700 balconies support scenic Japan and Asia routes. Standard cabins reflect 2004 design in sockets, bathrooms and storage. Mini-suites provide a better sitting area and can be worth the premium on a port-intensive cruise with long flights at either end.
Some current Princess pages show connected configurations that can sleep larger families. Confirm the exact room, not only the category image. Accessible passengers should review the 27 designated rooms, tender ports and shore-transport arrangements.
Dining after January 2026
Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill joined five main dining rooms, Sabatini’s, buffet and casual venues. Makoto Ocean strengthens the Japanese identity rather than functioning as a generic sushi counter. Reservations and package rules should be checked for the actual sailing.
Premier can be attractive to passengers planning several specialty meals, premium drinks and multiple Wi-Fi devices. Japan itineraries are often port-intensive, so a large package may be underused. Calculate the complete voyage cost and consider how many evenings will actually be spent aboard.
Japan itineraries and shore planning
Japanese ports can be exceptionally rewarding but operationally detailed. Berth location, shuttle arrangements, rail access and local opening hours vary. A strong itinerary with sensible port times is more important than a small difference in ship facilities.
Allow for long-haul flights, pre-cruise nights and seasonal weather. Cherry blossom, summer heat and autumn colour attract different demand and conditions. Diamond is the platform for the trip, not a substitute for proper destination planning.
