Norwegian Cruise Line fares can look simple until Free at Sea, service charges, speciality dining, Wi-Fi and room service are added. The line can still offer excellent value, but only when the basic fare and optional package are treated as separate products.

This guide uses the current Free at Sea programme for new bookings. More at Sea applies to an earlier booking period and should not be used to interpret a new 2026 reservation.

Included in the basic fare

• Cabin accommodation and daily housekeeping.
• Meals in designated complimentary main dining rooms, buffets and casual venues.
• Standard tea, drip coffee, water and selected juices in normal dining areas.
• Theatre shows, live music and most scheduled entertainment.
• Pools, hot tubs, fitness-centre access and many standard activities.
• Splash Academy and Entourage during normal operating sessions on eligible ships.

The exact venue list changes by ship. Prima Plus has a much wider complimentary food network than a smaller Sun Class vessel.

Free at Sea – what the upgrade can add

The current Free at Sea package can include an unlimited open bar, a set number of speciality-dining meals, Wi-Fi minutes and a US$50 shore-excursion credit for the first guest at each port.

For UK bookings, Norwegian says an additional cost applies for the optional upgrade. The upgrade amount depends on cruise length and promotion.

Free at Sea benefits are governed by age, cabin and market rules. Eligible guests in the same room can be required to choose the same offer.

The shore credit is per port for the first guest, not US$50 for every person. Wi-Fi is measured in minutes unless a stronger package is included or purchased.

Beverage-package gratuities and exclusions

The package name includes open bar, but the booking can still include a gratuity or service component for the beverage benefit.

Drink price limits and exclusions apply. Bottled water, speciality coffee, fresh juice, energy drinks and premium labels can require Free at Sea Plus or separate payment.

Passengers should inspect the final booking line items. A package described as included can increase the total through its mandatory gratuity component.

Speciality dining

Complimentary restaurants remain available without Free at Sea. Speciality venues charge by cover, package meal or menu, depending on restaurant and ship.

Norwegian’s current dining terms state that a 20% gratuity applies to restaurant charges and that additional main courses or premium selections can carry supplements.

A dining credit should be used for a full meal at a restaurant that represents clear value. It is wasteful when used merely to avoid an included main dining room the passenger would otherwise enjoy.

Daily service charge

The current daily charge is US$20 per guest for Club Balcony and lower categories and US$25 for The Haven and suites. It applies from age three.

This charge is separate from Free at Sea package gratuities and from the 20% added to drinks, speciality dining, spa and selected purchases.

Prepaying can settle the bill in advance, but it does not remove every onboard gratuity.

Wi-Fi

The basic fare does not normally include general Wi-Fi. Free at Sea provides a defined number of minutes, while Free at Sea Plus or paid plans can add unlimited or streaming access.

Minutes are normally allocated by guest or package terms and require logging out properly. Families with several devices can exhaust them quickly.

Do not value Wi-Fi at the headline retail price unless you would genuinely have bought the same plan.

Room service

Norwegian currently applies a US$4.95 breakfast room-service fee fleet-wide, with Haven and suite exceptions. Other room-service convenience charges can apply.

Non-complimentary beverages and special items can also attract a 20% gratuity.

The Local or buffet is the better-value late or casual option on ships where it is available.

• Alcohol and premium non-alcoholic drinks without a package.
• Most Wi-Fi without Free at Sea or a purchased plan.
• Speciality dining beyond credits.
• Daily service charges.
• Room service fees outside stated exceptions.
• Shore excursions beyond the first-guest credit.
• Spa, salon, thermal suite and fitness classes where charged.
• Race tracks, arcades, casino play and selected premium attractions.
• Photographs, shopping, transfers, insurance and flights unless packaged.

How to compare two NCL fares

Begin with the same cabin category and cancellation terms. Add the Free at Sea upgrade only when the benefits match intended behaviour.

Then add daily service charges, likely package gratuities, Wi-Fi upgrades, speciality meals, flights and excursions. A lower headline fare can lose its advantage after this calculation.

CruisePing would compare a basic fare plus selective spending against Free at Sea, not assume one approach wins for every passenger.

The CruisePing verdict

The basic NCL fare includes enough food and entertainment to enjoy the ship without packages. Free at Sea can be strong value for passengers who drink, use speciality restaurants, need Wi-Fi and book excursions.

It is poor value when the passenger drinks little, does not need connectivity and prefers included dining. The package should solve actual spending, not create a reason to consume more.
