CruisePing verdict
Choose Discovery 2 for the better itinerary, airport or fare – not because it is materially different from Discovery.

Best suited to
Passengers choosing a strong Discovery-class itinerary, indoor pool and manageable medium-sized ship.
Think carefully if
Travellers expecting a noticeably upgraded version of Marella Discovery or new-build cabins.
Marella Discovery 2 is not a materially different version of Marella Discovery. It has the same basic Vision-class layout, 918 cabins, nine restaurants, seven bars, an indoor and outdoor pool, climbing wall, minigolf and outdoor cinema. Repeating every facility would make this guide longer without making it more useful.
The rational booking decision is therefore itinerary-led. Compare the official Discovery 2 programme with its sister’s dates, departure airport, cabin availability and total price.
What is genuinely worth knowing
Discovery 2 carries about 1,836 passengers, slightly more than its sister’s published figure, but passengers are unlikely to experience that as a meaningful distinction. Its familiar central atrium and manageable scale are the real strengths.
The indoor pool is valuable in mixed weather, while the climbing wall and minigolf give families modest active choices. Dining and entertainment follow the established Discovery formula rather than offering a reason to select the ship in isolation.
Seasonal passenger mix
TUI states that Discovery 2 will operate adults-only sailings in winter 2026–27. That is a meaningful difference for those dates, not a permanent identity. Check the current adults-only rules before assuming whether children will be onboard.
Cabin choice
Balcony cabins are compact, and Deluxe Cabins use large windows rather than balconies. Families and groups should price the larger categories against adjacent or connecting rooms. Noise, lift access and distance to the dining areas matter more than a small difference between the two Discovery sisters.
The CruisePing recommendation
Choose Discovery 2 when it offers the better route, flight or fare. Choose Marella Discovery when its schedule is more convenient. Neither is a clear hardware upgrade over the other, and pretending otherwise would be marketing rather than useful advice.
