Passengers wanting the newest cabins, the widest dining choice or a permanently adults-only ship.
Marella Discovery is smaller and more traditional than Voyager or Explorer, but it contains some of the fleet’s most useful family facilities. The indoor pool, outdoor pool, climbing wall, minigolf, escape room and outdoor cinema give the ship practical variety without turning it into a giant resort.
TUI describes Discovery as the near-identical sister of Discovery 2 and lists 918 cabins, nine restaurants, seven bars and two pools. The two ships should therefore be compared primarily by itinerary, date and price.
The indoor pool matters
An indoor pool is more useful than a large restaurant count on a cool, windy or wet sailing. It gives families and swimmers somewhere usable when the open deck is uncomfortable and makes Discovery more versatile than the one-pool Explorer ships.
The climbing wall and minigolf provide short bursts of activity rather than a full adventure-park experience. They work best for families who want a few active options between ports, not for teenagers expecting Royal Caribbean-scale attractions.
Dining and entertainment
Nine restaurants provide enough choice for a week, with the main dining room, buffet-style options, Italian food and poolside snacks supported by chargeable speciality venues. The dining range is narrower than Voyager’s but also easier to understand.
The Broadway Show Lounge, live music and outdoor cinema form the evening core. The five-storey atrium gives the ship a recognisable centre, although public areas can feel busy when weather moves everyone inside.
Cabins and family accommodation
Family Suites and Family Junior Suites are a genuine advantage for larger groups, but availability and price need comparison with two separate cabins. Standard balcony cabins are relatively compact and many outside cabins provide better value on port-intensive itineraries.
Because the vessel entered service in 1996, bathroom finish, sound insulation and storage can vary. Choose by the deck plan and recent cabin photographs, not simply by the general refurbishment of public rooms.
Seasonal adults-only operation
Marella Discovery is not permanently a family ship. TUI’s current adults-only programme makes it adults-only for summer 2026. Passengers should check the exact sailing because the same hardware can host a very different atmosphere in another season.
Discovery or Discovery 2?
Read the Marella Discovery 2 guide, then choose the better itinerary, airport and fare. There is not enough physical difference to justify paying substantially more for one sister without a route or cabin advantage.
