The best Norwegian Cruise Line ship depends on whether the passenger wants a floating family resort, contemporary design, an itinerary-led medium-sized ship, a solo community or The Haven. A ranking that places every newest ship above every older one ignores the route and the final fare.
Norwegian has 21 active ships and a future 2027 vessel, Norwegian Aura. This guide ranks the current fleet by class and passenger need rather than pretending CruisePing should publish 21 repetitive ship pages at once.

Prima Plus – choose for family hardware
Aqua and Luna are the strongest current NCL resort ships. Both combine Indulge, Ocean Boulevard, the Slidecoaster, digital sports and a large Haven.
Aqua has the advantage of being the first and may offer different home ports. Luna offers newer entertainment and current Miami deployment. Price and itinerary should decide.
Prima Class – choose for design and dining
Prima and Viva offer a more spacious passenger-to-tonnage feel than Breakaway Plus and keep the best outward-looking design ideas.
They suit couples, food-focused travellers and families who want activities without making the waterpark the centre of the holiday. Outdoor spaces are less useful in poor weather.
Breakaway and Breakaway Plus – choose for proven resort cruising
Bliss, Encore, Joy and Escape offer broad dining, entertainment, observation or activity spaces, often at lower prices than Prima Plus.
Breakaway and Getaway can deliver the same basic NCL resort formula with fewer latest-generation features. Ship-specific refits and deployment matter more than class age alone.
Jewel, Dawn and Sun classes – choose the itinerary
These ships are smaller, simpler and often deployed on longer or port-intensive routes. They suit passengers who prefer a recognisable ship over a neighbourhood-scale resort.
Norwegian Star is the leading UK example in 2026. Sun and Sky also depart Southampton, while Jewel Class ships regularly serve Alaska, Asia and longer itineraries.
Cabins and accessible layouts are older. The lower fare should compensate for the missing attractions.
The three one-off ships
Norwegian Epic remains a large, unusual ship with extensive entertainment, solo Studios and a divisive bathroom arrangement.
Pride of America is chosen for Hawaii rather than fleet ranking. Its inter-island programme and US operation create different pricing and service conditions.
Norwegian Spirit is a smaller destination-led ship and the only current NCL vessel without Splash Academy or Entourage. Families should not book it assuming fleet-wide youth provision.
Norwegian Aura is future, not current
Norwegian has opened sales for Norwegian Aura, planned for 2027 with a larger Prima Plus platform. It should not be counted as an active 2026 ship or used to dismiss current Aqua and Luna sailings.
