Norwegian Star is the most useful individual NCL guide for British passengers in 2026 because she operates Southampton itineraries while offering more dining and public-room choice than the smaller Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Sky.

The official Norwegian Star page lists a 2001 build, 2021 refurbishment, capacity for 2,298 guests, a length of 965 feet and 1,031 crew. She is a medium-sized Dawn Class ship, not a stripped-down version of Norwegian Prima.

Why choose Star from Southampton?

A Southampton departure avoids flights, overseas hotels and airport transfers for many UK passengers. Star’s 2026 programme includes longer European and repositioning voyages where the itinerary is at least as important as the ship.

Her manageable size reduces walking and crowd complexity compared with Breakaway Plus or Prima Plus. The trade-off is older cabins, fewer headline attractions and less dramatic outdoor architecture.

Dining is broad enough without being overwhelming

Norwegian lists complimentary venues including Versailles, Aqua, Garden Cafe, Topsiders and O’Sheehan’s. The current speciality selection includes Cagney’s, Le Bistro, La Cucina, Ginza, Moderno and Teppanyaki.

The two main dining rooms allow Freestyle arrival rather than fixed sittings. O’Sheehan’s is useful for casual meals outside conventional dinner hours.

CruisePing would use Free at Sea dining credits for one or two restaurants with a clear preference, not buy a large package merely because the ship has several paid choices.

Cabins need old-ship scrutiny

Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Mini-Suite or Club Balcony and suite categories are available, with some dedicated or solo-priced options depending on sailing.

The 2021 refurbishment improved presentation, but bathroom dimensions, sockets, storage and sound insulation remain those of an older design. Deck location matters more than a fresh colour scheme.

A midships outside or balcony cabin can be the sensible choice for long northern itineraries. Passengers prone to motion should avoid extreme forward or aft rooms.

Spice H2O and adult space

Star has Spice H2O as an adult-focused outdoor venue. It provides a useful escape from the family pool area, although weather determines how valuable it is on northern European routes.

There is no giant race track or Aqua Slidecoaster. Sea days depend more on lounges, theatre, spa, fitness, trivia, live music and the itinerary.

Families and solos

Splash Academy and Entourage make Star viable for families, but the ship is better for children who enjoy clubs, pools and traditional cruise activities than for those expecting a waterpark resort.

Solo travellers benefit from the medium scale, flexible dining and NCL’s expanded Solo categories. Studio Lounge access should be confirmed because it varies by ship and cabin type.

The CruisePing recommendation

Choose Norwegian Star for a no-fly 2026 itinerary, a medium-sized ship and flexible dining. Choose Aqua or Luna when the ship’s attractions are central to the holiday.

CruisePing would not pay a large premium for a suite merely to modernise an old ship. A well-positioned balcony plus selective Free at Sea benefits is the more balanced purchase.
